Chest Pain, 2022, oil on canvas, 61x46cm

Doug Moran National Portrait Prize Semi Finalist 2022

Showing vulnerability and opening up to those we trust and love builds connections, and I believe connecting with others is one of the most beautiful things in life. Chest Pain is a self-portrait that explores my body’s natural response to deep sadness. When I experience great sadness I literally feel like my heart is going to break. I take shorter breaths of air and I often place my hand on my heart to try to calm myself. I hope this painting prompts viewers to talk to a loved one or a professional during their own hard times.
